THE NORTH KARELIA BIOSPHERE RESERVE

 

Koli is home to the North Karelia Biosphere Reserve. The biosphere reserve belongs to UNESCO's worldwide Man and the Biosphere programme. This nature conservation programme, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2011, covers a total of 563 reserves in 109 countries.

 

The purpose of the programme is to establish model reserves for sustainable development to sustainably combine human activities and nature conservation. The North Karelia Biosphere Reserve works in cooperation with the Koli Cultura project to develop sustainable tourism and model sustainable tourist activities.
